💡 Valuable things kids don’t learn in school

Kids who graduated this year are estimated to retire in 2073. Their careers are going to be defined by forces we cannot predict.

With the changes in AI that have happened just over the past few months alone, we can barely imagine what the world will look like in just 5 years (let alone in our kids’ lifetimes)!

So how should parents help their kids prepare for a future they cannot predict? What skills will be necessary for success in a world with technologies that haven’t been invented yet?

Here are 4 ways to future-proof your kids’ careers, so they can achieve success no matter what the future holds:

  1. Build people skills.

While ChatGPT and other AI models can simulate human capacities like empathy, creativity, and active listening, these models are not capable of actually experiencing these human emotions.

That’s why the skills that allow us to better connect with others and build our emotional intelligence are the skills that will set our kids apart in the age of AI.

Work on your kids’ communication skills, relationship management skills, make sure they work well on a team. Each of these abilities will carry them forward in their career and in their lives!

  1. Get offline and into the real world.

As the world becomes increasingly online, it will become increasingly valuable and unique to show up offline.

As it becomes more common to network with mentors on social media, your kids will stand out for their ability to make eye contact and have a conversation in-person. As it becomes more common to have your ideas written for you by AI, your kid will stand out for being able to share their ideas offline and think on their toes.

Public speaking skills, conversation skills, and other real-world skills will make sure your kids stand out from the Internet crowd.

  1. Become an innovator.

Right now, AI can only tell us about what already exists — it can only come up with ideas that have essentially been had before.

The ability to innovate and come up with original ideas is a human trait.

Work with your child to develop their creativity and build expertise in their field. This will set them up to create the innovations that will eventually change the world for the better.

  1. Encourage adaptability.

The world is constantly changing. That’s why one of the most important skills we can teach our kids is adaptability. The ability to rapidly equip new knowledge is going to become one of the highest-value skills in our future world.

Get kids started now. If they’re not already using AI tools, ask them how they can start using it to enhance their lives. Do they understand its limitations? Do they have ideas for how it must be improved?

Being exposed to the unfamiliar on a regular basis will ultimately make them more courageous in the face of challenges — a key skillset for entrepreneurs. The people who are always learning are the people who will come out ahead.
